Registration is required for childbirth education classes. You may register online or by phone.

Individual Class Descriptions

Baby Care

This three hour class focuses on basic care of the newborn. Topics include: bath demonstration, feeding and diapering tips, normal newborn characteristics, and well baby/sick baby information.

Breastfeeding Konnect

A group meeting of mothers and their babies to discuss concerns and issues of breastfeeding, parenting and infant care. Breastfeeding Time management Stress management Infant massage Postpartum blues This is a perfect time to network with other new mothers in a relaxing and fun environment.

Breastfeeding Preparation

A certified lactation consultant conducts this one time 2-1/2 hour class. Discussion includes prenatal preparation, prevention and/or relief of common problems, how to successfully breastfeed while returning to work.

Childbirth Preparation

Join us as we help you prepare for childbirth by covering the following topics: physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, nutrition, signs and symptoms of labor, stages of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, medical interventions/medications and what to expect after delivery. A tour of the maternity area is included with this class. A variety of formats are available to meet your scheduling needs: one-day express class, 2-day weekend class, or weekly series.

Childbirth Refresher

The Childbirth Refresher Class is for experienced, expectant parents who wish to review relaxation and breathing techniques by attending a two or three-week course within the regular Childbirth Prep. class. The classes are offered in the evening during the regular Childbirth Preparation Class; or by attending Sunday only; or part of the Weekend Childbirth Class. Due to the subject matter, we encourage you not to bring children to childbirth class. Big brothers/sisters are invited to sibling class.

Grandparents Class

This class focuses on current maternity practice and updates grandparents-to-be on changes in infant care and safety guidelines. Class includes a tour of the maternity department. This is a one time, 2 hour class held every other month.

Infant / Child CPR

This one time, three hour class is taught by CPR certified registered nurses. Basic CPR skills and choking prevention are taught. No certification is given. Class space is limited to ensure a low instructor/student ratio for a great learning experience.

Laboring Naturally

This class is in addition to the regular Childbirth Prep classes. •Relaxation and breathing techniques •Labor and delivery options

Sibling Class

This one time two hour class is designed for children 2 ½ to 10 years old to help prepare them to welcome the new baby into the family. Activities include: a video on the role of the big brother/sister, diapering and feeding dolls, making a gift for the new baby and a tour with parents of the maternity department.

Teen Childbirth Preparation

The Teen Childbirth Preparation is a comprehensive weekend class that includes childbirth preparation, child care and breastfeeding information for the teen mother and her support person. The class is offered on Saturday and Sunday of one weekend from 9am to 3pm. Class size is small to maximize individual attention and peer support. Teen Circle of Caring is a support group provided by Project Empower, a component of Unified Health Services. This prevention program conducts discussion groups for pregnant and/or parenting teenagers living in Montgomery County. The goal of the program is to educate young adults through healthy decision -making skills curriculum and activities. The group is held on the first and third Monday of every month from 5pm to 6:30 pm. This is free to any pregnant or parenting teen residing in Montgomery County.

Tour of Maternity Dept.

This is a comprehensive tour of the maternity area including the Labor and Delivery and Mother/Baby Units. Please park in the visitor's garage or main parking lot in front of the hospital (a parking pass will be provided for the garage after the tour). Please meet in the main lobby on the first floor in front of the information desk. Pre-registration for the tour is not necessary. The tour is included in the following classes: Childbirth Preparation, Weekend Childbirth Preparation, Teen Childbirth Preparation, Baby & Me Sibling Class and Grandparenting Class

Severe Weather Advisories

In the case of severe weather (or the prediction of incoming severe weather), your childbirth classes may be cancelled. If you have a class scheduled at one of our facilities and the weather is questionable, please call the Childbirth Education Office for more information. The voice mail recording will be updated accordingly if there are class cancellations. The Childbirth Education Office will try to make weather-related decisions by 4pm. If the weather becomes an issue after 4pm, it may be difficult to alert everyone in time. If your class is not cancelled and you feel the weather is too threatening, please stay home and call the office the next business day to reschedule your class. If a class is cancelled, a make-up class will be scheduled.
